The status quo within a lion pride does not remain the same for very long. The dominant males are usurped, lionesses get injured or killed, terrible losses of cubs are suffered and juvenile male lions get pushed out of the pride. When tackling larger prey, like elephant, giraffe and full grown buffalo, it is the co-ordination of the females in a pride, and on occasion the males, which tips the scales in their favour. Whilst the females do the majority of the hunting, it is the role of the dominant male(s) to secure a territory for the pride and ensure the survival of the young cubs.
