Hide&seek
An elephant’s front feet are roughly circular, with five blunt toenails whereas the hind feet are oval and have four blunt toenails. The front feet are larger than the back feet since the front feet support the very heavy head and tusks of the elephant. The speed at which an elephant is moving can be accurately gauged by the relative positions of the front and back spoor. When moving at a leisurely pace the back track falls behind the front. As the animal picks up speed the gap between the front and rear tracks closes; when moving at top speed the rear track actually overtakes the front and the toes scuff the ground. Elephants are in fact walking on tip-toe on a cushioned pad (sole) made up of elastic like tissue. This allows elephants to move amazingly silently for such a large animal.
Wild dogs, although not strictly territorial, will avoid clashing with another pack. They range widely, thus requiring extensive wildlife habitats in which to survive. It is thought that fewer than 3,500 remain in Africa today. They are to be found in isolated pockets in Kruger National Park in South Africa, the Zambezi Valley, Laikapia in Kenya, the Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park in Tanzania, South Luangwa National Park in Zambia, Moremi/Selinda/Linyanti in northern Botswana, Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, Niassa Reserve in Mozambique, and have been reintroduced into a number of private reserves in South Africa.
It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.
Well done to Wiam and Roné for conducting a guided experience for guests this morning in False Bay Park. Everyone enjoyed the nature-guided experience and learning about this unique Sand forest habitat. 🌿
